Excerpts from an interview with Minister for Community Services Linda Burney, NSW, Australia
“There is strong scientific evidence that if parents of young children sing, tell stories, talk and laugh with their children from birth, they will lay firm foundations for future reading, writing, emotional and social skills,
“For example the act of talking to and with your child will help them. The more conversations children hear, the better their talking and reading skills will grow.
“The emphasis is on variety and richness of experience – and fun. It is not about forcing your child to learn or spending money on expensive educational material but about being a little more aware while you enjoy your child’s company.”
